Why Your Hair Feels Different Now (And What to Do About It)

Something changes. You can't always pinpoint when, but at some point your hair just stops feeling like your hair. It's drier. Thinner. Less responsive. You try a new product. You drink more water. You blame stress, and honestly, you're probably right about that last one.

I hear some version of this story almost every week. In my chairs in Phoenix and Los Gatos, it's one of the most consistent things clients bring up, often quietly, almost like a confession: something feels off and I don't know how to fix it.

Here's what I want you to know: most of the time, this isn't permanent. And it's almost never just one thing.

What's Actually Behind Hair Changes in Your 30s, 40s, and Beyond

Hair changes for women in this season of life are real and they're usually layered. Stress (chronic or acute), hormonal shifts, postpartum recovery, hard water, over-processed hair, and nutritional gaps can all show up at the scalp before they show up anywhere else.

Your scalp is skin. It responds to everything your body is going through. When something is off internally, whether that's cortisol levels, iron, thyroid function, or estrogen, the scalp is often the first place it registers. Increased shedding, slower growth, changes in texture. These aren't cosmetic problems. They're signals.

This is why I don't approach hair health as a single-product fix. It's a conversation between what's happening inside your body and what you're doing on the outside. Both matter.

The Products I Recommend (and Why I Actually Recommend Them)

I'm pretty selective about what I put behind. I've tried a lot. I keep coming back to the same things because I see them work, on myself and on clients.

Nutrafol is the one I recommend more than almost anything else for women dealing with thinning or shedding. It's not a quick fix. You're looking at a few months before you see real change, but the results are consistent. It's a hair growth nutraceutical formulated specifically for women, with targeted formulas for postpartum, perimenopause, and stress-related hair loss. If you've been struggling with shedding and nothing topical is making a dent, this is worth a serious look. Shop here.

Mane Ivy is another brand I stand behind completely. Clean, effective, and honestly it smells incredible. Their products are designed around real hair health, not just surface shine. Use code CLAIRE15 for a discount. Check it out here.

For shampoo and treatment, I've been recommending Monat to clients who are dealing with buildup, dryness, or scalp sensitivity. It's a line I trust for its focus on scalp health and natural integrity, particularly for color-treated hair that needs support between appointments. Shop here.

And if you're dealing with hard water, which is very real in the Phoenix area, a Canopy filtered showerhead genuinely makes a difference. Chlorine and mineral buildup is one of those invisible contributors to dry, brittle hair that people overlook entirely. Check it out here.

What a Healthy Hair Routine Actually Looks Like

There's no one-size-fits-all answer here, but there are a few principles I come back to consistently:

Start at the scalp. Cleanse it properly. Don't skip conditioner at the roots if your scalp is dry. That's a myth that's done a lot of damage. Use a scalp-focused shampoo a couple of times a week, and give your scalp a real massage when you do. Circulation matters.

Be honest about how often you're washing. Over-washing strips natural oils. Under-washing creates buildup that blocks follicles. Find your rhythm, and adjust by season. Summer in Phoenix requires a different cadence than winter in Los Gatos.

Protect before you style. Heat protection isn't optional if you're using tools regularly. Neither is a good leave-in if your hair is color-treated or extension-supported.

Be consistent with your support. Whether that's a supplement like Nutrafol, a scalp treatment, or just committing to weekly deep conditioning, consistency is what creates change. One good wash week doesn't move the needle. A real routine does.

On Extensions and Color: What Hair Health Makes Possible

One of the things I love about my work is that it's not just about how your hair looks when you leave the chair. It's about building hair that can hold a beautiful color and, when you're ready, extensions that last.

Extensions done well, meaning with attention to your natural hair's current health, are a tool, not a band-aid. I won't put extensions on compromised hair. It's not good for you, and honestly, they won't last the way they should. So when clients come to me wanting more length or volume, we always talk about where their hair health actually is first.

Same with color. If your scalp is reactive or your strands are depleted, we're going to address that before we push your hair into a major transformation. Dimensional color on healthy hair looks completely different than the same formula on stressed hair. The health shows.

The Part Nobody Talks About: Slowing Down Enough to Notice

Here's something I think about a lot: so much of hair health is about attention. Actually noticing changes. Taking five minutes to do the scalp massage. Drinking the water. Lighting the candle, sitting down, and just pausing.

I've been loving the Âme Terra Signature Candle lately. Palo Santo, Golden Sandalwood, and Oud. It's the kind of scent that makes you actually stop. Slow down. The brand describes it as luxury that's minimal and intentional, and I think that's exactly right. It's not fussy. It just creates a moment. For me, it's become part of the wind-down after a long day in the salon, a small ritual that makes the rest of the evening feel more deliberate. If you're someone who does any kind of hair or skin care routine at home, burning something that grounds you while you do it is genuinely worth it. Shop here.

Hair health and self-care aren't separate categories. They're the same conversation.
