Wash Day 101: How to Properly Wash Your Hair With Extensions

Wash day can make a bigger difference in the health of your hair and extensions than you might think.

Especially when you wear extensions, how you wash your hair matters just as much as the products you're using. You want to actually clean your scalp and natural hair, make sure you're rinsing everything thoroughly, and take care of your hair while it's in its most fragile state.

I've been talking a lot about hair health lately, so I wanted to break down a few of the wash day habits I recommend to my clients.

1. Actually Get Between Your Rows

Don't be afraid to wash your scalp properly, especially with extensions.

I see this happen all the time. Clients are worried about messing with their extensions, so they barely touch their scalp when they shampoo. But your scalp still needs to be cleaned.

When you're washing, gently lift the natural hair and get in between your extension rows. Use your fingertips to really work the shampoo into your scalp rather than just rubbing the hair on top.

You don't need to be aggressive. You just need to be thorough.

And if you wear extensions, this is one of those little things that can make a big difference in how your scalp and hair feel between appointments.

2. Rinse. Then Rinse Again.

This one sounds obvious, but it's worth saying.

Make sure you're actually rinsing all of your shampoo and conditioner out of your hair.

Product left behind on the scalp or between extension rows can contribute to buildup, which is exactly what we're trying to avoid with a good wash day routine.

Take your time and let the water really get through your hair. With extensions, I like to think about washing in sections so you're not just rinsing the surface.

Your hair should feel clean when you're finished, not coated in leftover product.

3. Add a Gentle Clarifying Shampoo Once a Week

Even with a good everyday shampoo, your hair can accumulate product, oil, dry shampoo, and everything else we put on it throughout the week.

That's where a gentle clarifying shampoo can come in.

I recommend incorporating one into your routine about once a week, depending on your hair and scalp needs. The goal isn't to strip your hair or leave it feeling squeaky. It's simply to give your scalp and strands a little reset.

If you wear extensions, this can be especially helpful because you have more hair and more places for product to collect.

The important part is choosing something that's effective but still gentle enough for your specific hair.

4. Please Blow-Dry Your Hair

I know. Sometimes the last thing you want to do after washing your hair is spend time blow-drying it.

But your hair is at its most fragile when it's wet, so I don't recommend going to bed with wet hair or leaving your hair wet for hours whenever you can avoid it.

Wet hair is more prone to stretching and breakage, and sleeping on wet hair can also create an environment where moisture and product can sit against the scalp for longer than we'd like.

And with extensions, drying your hair properly is even more important.

You don't have to create a perfect blowout every wash day. We're talking about getting your hair and scalp thoroughly dry, especially around your roots, scalp, and extension attachment areas.

If you want to rough dry your hair and call it a day, I'm completely on board.

Your Wash Day Doesn't Need to Be Complicated

You don't need a bathroom full of products or a 45-minute routine to take better care of your hair.

Start with the basics:

Clean your scalp properly.

Get between your extension rows.

Rinse everything thoroughly.

Clarify when your hair needs a reset.

And don't sleep on wet hair.

Those simple habits can make a noticeable difference in how your scalp feels, how your extensions wear, and how healthy your natural hair stays between appointments.

And if you're an extension client of mine, your routine may need to look a little different depending on your hair, extension method, lifestyle, and how often you're washing.

That's why I'm always happy to talk through your routine with you at your appointment. If you're not sure whether you're washing, drying, or caring for your extensions the right way, ask me. I'd much rather help you make a few small changes now than have you frustrated with your hair later.

Healthy extensions start with healthy habits at home. And honestly, a good wash day is one of the easiest places to start.
