Seasonal Hair Changes: What to Change and What to Pay Attention To
There’s something about a change in season that makes us want to change our hair, too.
Maybe you’re ready for a new cut after months of wearing it up. Maybe you want to take your blonde a little warmer or richer for fall. Maybe you’re craving more dimension, a deeper brunette, or just a completely different look.
And sometimes the change isn’t one you planned on.
Your hair can start feeling drier. Your scalp might feel different. You may notice more shedding than usual, less volume, or that your hair just isn’t behaving the way it did a few months ago.
Both kinds of change are worth paying attention to.
The Changes You Actually Want
Fall is a great time to reassess what you want from your hair.
Summer tends to bring a lot of maintenance challenges. Sun, heat, swimming, humidity, and more frequent washing can all affect the way your hair looks and feels. By the time cooler weather rolls around, you might simply be ready for something different.
Maybe that means cutting off a few inches. Maybe it means adding layers or changing the shape around your face. Or maybe the cut stays exactly the same and we change the color.
I love this time of year for a richer, more dimensional color. Blondes can shift toward warmer or softer tones, brunettes can add depth, and lived-in color can be adjusted to complement the season without completely starting over.
The goal isn't necessarily a dramatic transformation. Sometimes a small change is enough to make your hair feel fresh again.
The same goes for extensions. If you've been wearing them through the summer, this is a good time to check in on how they're feeling, how your natural hair is doing underneath, and whether your current method or amount of hair still makes sense for your lifestyle.
Your hair doesn't have to stay exactly the same just because you've found something that works.
The Changes You Didn't Ask For
Then there are the seasonal changes that show up whether you invited them or not.
After summer, I often see clients dealing with hair that feels dry, rough, or more fragile than usual. Between sun exposure, heat, chlorine, salt water, and styling, your hair can have a lot to recover from.
Your scalp can need some attention, too. Changes in temperature, indoor heating or air conditioning, and shifts in your washing routine can contribute to dryness or buildup.
And then there's shedding.
It's normal to notice some variation in hair shedding throughout the year, but if you're seeing a significant or persistent change in density, it's worth paying attention to rather than assuming it's simply seasonal. Hair thinning can have many different causes, so if you're concerned about a noticeable change, that's something to discuss with a qualified healthcare professional.
So, What Does Your Hair Actually Need?
This is where I don't love a one-size-fits-all approach.
If your hair feels dry and rough, it may need more moisture. If it feels weak, stretchy, or breaks easily, you may need to focus more on repair and strengthening. And if your hair feels coated, heavy, or dull, you may simply need a good reset to remove buildup.
Those things can look surprisingly similar from the outside, but the solution isn't always the same.
The same goes for your scalp. If you're experiencing dryness, itchiness, excess oil, or buildup, don't just keep adding products and hoping something works. Sometimes your routine needs to be simplified or adjusted.
And if you're wearing extensions, pay even more attention to what's happening at the scalp and around your attachment points. Keeping your scalp clean, thoroughly rinsing your products, and properly drying your hair can make a big difference in both comfort and the longevity of your extensions.
A Seasonal Hair Check-In
Instead of thinking of your hair as something you figure out once and then maintain forever, I like to think of it as something you check in with.
What worked in July might not be what your hair needs in October.
Maybe you need a new shape. Maybe your color needs a little adjustment. Maybe your hair needs moisture or repair. Maybe your extensions need to be refreshed or reassessed. Or maybe everything is working and you don't need to change a thing.
That's the nice thing about seasonal changes. They're a good excuse to pay attention.
Whether you're in Scottsdale or Los Gatos, if your hair is feeling different lately, bring it up at your next appointment. We can look at what's actually happening and adjust your color, cut, extensions, or home routine accordingly.
Sometimes change is exactly what your hair needs.
